This is clever manipulation over real footage. These rides do not exist in real life, but oh man, could you imagine if they did? Just seeing it makes me queasy. Thank you angrynerdyblogger for posting it on the sixpenceee tag and bringing it to my attention. (Video)

François Vincent Raspail was a prominent figure in 18th century France. He was a doctor, chemist as well as a politician. He got into trouble more than once for his socialist ideas He referred to prison as his second home.

He is buried in the same grave as his wife, Henriette Troussot (1799-1853), Jules Emile Raspail (1831-1887), engineer, and François Vincent Raspail (1823-1899), painter, engraver. The tomb is decorated with a representation of a spectrum as a shroud, one hand clinging to the bars representing the ghost of Mrs. Raspail who died during the imprisonment of her husband. WHITE INK TATTOOS

The tattoo is completely done with white ink, leaving a ghostly image that looks quite different from a traditional tattoo. These tattoos can look like scarification or they can appear to be very subtle. (All About White Tattoos) (UV Tattoos)

ULTRA-VIOLET TATTOOS

Although they do look cool under a UV light and is suitable for those who want a tattoo without the social consequences, the ingredients used for a UV tattoo aren’t 100% safe. There has been reported numerous cases of skin rashes, blisters and infection. These is some concern that they may contribute to cancer because they contain phosphorous.  (Source & More Information)

THE COCONUT CRAB

Birgus latro also known as the coconut crab is the largest terrestrial arthropod in the world. They can grow up to a leg span of 3 ft. It sometimes takes 120 years to reach it’s full size. It’s also known as the robber crab due to its propensity for stealing silverware and pots and pans.

They are endemic to islands in the Pacific & Indian ocean. The coconut crab eats anything it can get its claws on. It’ll go after fruit, vegetation, and carrion: dead birds and other coconut crabs. It really loves coconuts & will use it’s massive pinchers to crack one open.

While you might perceive them as a threat because of it’s size, humans are a larger threat to this species. Human encroachment has thrown their food chains into chaos and they are disappearing rapidly. (Source) (Japanese Spider Crab)

sixpenceee:

Qian Hongyan was just four when she lost both her legs. A speeding trucker left her for dead as she crossed the main road in her village of Zhuangshang in southern China.

For nearly two years Qian was immobile as she didn’t even have enough of her body left to sit up in a wheelchair. Doctors said her only hope of being able to move by herself again would be extensive surgery to allow her to be fitted with prosthetic limbs. Her parents couldn’t afford this treatment.

Qian’s granddad Yuan came up with a simple but effective treatment to get her moving again. He took a basketball the village boys had discarded and cut a hole just big enough for tiny Qian to fit into, padded the inside with stiff floor mats from his car, then propped her up inside. All of a sudden Qian was able to stabilize herself and was able to by move herself by rolling the ball in any direction she wanted. She supported herself using wooden handles.

From that day on Qian would not be stopped by any obstacle. She went back to school, started to play with her friends again, and started to get back the life of any girl her age. She began professional swimming training in 2007 and defied the odds of her double amputation to become one of the first members of the Yunnan Youth Swimming Club.

She won three gold medals in last year’s Yunnan Para Games and took a gold and two silver medals at the National Swimming Championship for the Disabled (Under 18) in 2009 before continuing impressively at this year’s Para Games.

SOURCE

I should have added this in the original post but after attention in the Chinese press, Qian traveled to Beijing to receive free artificial limbs at the China Rehabilitation Research Center, a center that has been providing help to the disabled in China for over 20 years. At 18 years old she is ready for her full adult prosthetics.

HOW IT ALL STARTED
It began during 1692, after a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft.
In January 1692, 9-year-old Elizabeth Parris and 11-year-old Abigail Williams began having fits, including violent contortions and uncontrollable outbursts of screaming. After a local doctor, William Griggs, diagnosed bewitchment, other young girls in the community began to exhibit similar symptoms.
HYSTERIA SPREADS
The girls blamed 3 women for bewitching them: Tituba, the Parris’ Caribbean slave; Sarah Good, a homeless beggar; and Sarah Osborne, an elderly impoverished woman. While Good & Osborne pleaded innocence, Tituba confessed to be guilty.
She said "The Devil came to me and bid me serve him." She described elaborate images of black dogs, red cats, yellow birds and a "black man" who wanted her to sign his book. She admitted that she signed the book and said there were several other witches looking to destroy the Puritans. All three women were put in jail.
HANGINGS
The first woman who has hanged was Bridget Bishop. She was known for her gossipy habits and promiscuity. When asked if she committed witchcraft she responded “I am innocent as the child unborn.”
Overall 19 people were hanged. 7 died in jail and a 71-year-old man was pressed to death with heavy stones after he refused to enter a plea at his arraignment.
CONCLUSION
Trails continued to dwindle in the 1693. Many people realized it was ridiculous and began to speak out against it. A respected minister Cotton Mather warned against the dubious value of evidence against witches.
In January 1697, the Massachusetts General Court declared a day of fasting for the tragedy of the Salem witch trials. Massachusetts Colony passed legislation restoring the good names of the condemned and providing financial restitution to their heirs in 1711.
