“At around 1:30 a.m., we awoke to the sound of a breath-stealing explosion, I scrambled to the camera just in time to capture a moonlit and lava-covered Fuego as it put on this beautiful display of activity and power.” - Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala; Photo by Andrew Shepard

These pictures are of Lakshmi Tatma. Lakshmi was revered as a deity and worshipped from birth. She was born joined to a“parasitic twin that stopped developing in her mother’s womb. She absorbed the limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped fetus. Thus, not only did she have eight limbs, she had four kidneys, entangled nerves, two stomach cavities and two chest cavities. She is doing well now and has undergone a surgery to remove her parasitic twin. (Source)

Platty the dog has what is known as a Maxillary Fibrosarcoma tumor. He had been left at the Tulsa Animal Welfare shelter in Oklahoma. It was there that Alli, a shelter volunteer fell in love with the pup. Platty was given a grim diagnosis of only a week or two left to live and Alli couldn’t bear to see him die in the shelter, so she decided to take him home. Unfortunately, he passed away in August of 2014. (Source)

The following is a whelk egg case. The female extrudes the rubbery case, which looks like a series of disks attached to a cord, and glues one end of the case to the seafloor. Each disk contains 20 or more eggs that develop in about two weeks into hungry baby whelks, complete with fully developed shells. (Source)
